It’s hot and no one in child care goes outside in this kind of heat. It’s just not safe.
Q: So, what do you do with all those kids inside?
A: Treat it like a rainy day.
We made tin foil sculptures and played in the gym, watched a video about dinosaurs, went to swimming lessons (indoors) and made rockets. Late in the day when the sun wasn’t as intense, the kids did go outside to launch them. This was great because we didn’t need to be outside for long.
Quite honestly, I’ve never had a sunny day when I felt like I couldn’t take kids outside.
Yes, it’s been hot in Wisconsin before, but not this hot. Of course, the heat index is a relatively new thing, so who knows, perhaps it was this hot and we just didn’t know it. Regardless, globing warming pundits say that hot weathers is going to be the norm in the future. Best get used to it.
So, what would I do if I had to take kids outside on a hot, hot day?
Drink lots of fluid.
Stay out of the sun.
Play with water.
Play board games and cards.
Practice being lazy.
Make fans.
Hike in the morning. Go slow.
Drink lots of water and ice cream.
Take your time.
Remember how cold it is in January.
Be happy it’s not January.
Let me know what you do when the weather turns hot.

Visit a county or state park. The fees are usually minimal and you can stay all day. Get the kids involved in packing a lunch and have a picnic in the shade (choose the sun if your cold!). What we do at our Texas summer camp is bring plant and animal identification books and try to locate as many as we can! Do not forgot to bring plenty of water and always check the maps of the park before you plan.
Great ideas. I looked up your camp and it looks fun. Thank for the comment.
